India will host a five-day meeting of BRICS nations in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, beginning Tuesday, bringing together representatives from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa to discuss key issues related to agriculture and food security.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced on Monday that the summit will comprise a three-day Agriculture Working Group meeting from June 10 to 12, followed by a two-day BRICS Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting on June 12 and 13.

The discussions will focus on a wide range of issues, including food security, farmer welfare, nutrition, climate-resilient and smart agriculture, digital farming technologies, global agricultural trade, supply chains, research collaboration and knowledge exchange.

Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics in agriculture will also be on the agenda.

Highlighting the importance of the gathering, Chouhan said that BRICS has emerged as a powerful voice of developing nations on the global stage. He noted that the summit would provide an important platform for member countries to strengthen cooperation and share best practices in the agricultural sector.

The Union Minister said a joint declaration would be issued after the BRICS agriculture ministers reach a consensus on key issues discussed during the meeting.

Recalling India’s previous leadership role within the grouping, Chouhan pointed out that the country had successfully presided over BRICS meetings in 2012, 2016, and 2021.

The former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh also emphasized that the summit is being held at a significant time, as the state government led by Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has declared 2026 as the “Agriculture Welfare Year,” underscoring its commitment to strengthening the agricultural sector and improving farmers’ livelihoods.
