Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday described the BJP’s performance across states as a “historic day”, framing the results as a sign of public trust in governance while urging party workers to avoid retaliation and focus on the future.
The Prime Minister’s remarks come amid a charged political atmosphere following the results, with the BJP registering strong gains in multiple states. Even as celebrations broke out at the party headquarters in Delhi, PM Modi sought to strike a conciliatory note, calling for an end to violence and political hostility.
Opening his address with chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”, PM Modi told party workers, “Today is a historic day. It is unprecedented. When years of efforts turn into success, the happiness that is seen on the faces of people is the same happiness that I see on the faces of BJP workers across the country today.”
PM Modi calls for calm, says focus should be on future
While highlighting the electoral gains, the Prime Minister underlined the need for restraint.
“…Today, when the BJP has won, the focus should be on change, not revenge. The focus should be on the future, not fear. I appeal to the workers of all political parties: let’s end this endless cycle of violence once and for all…” he said.
Referring to violence during previous Bengal elections, Modi said this election stood out because peaceful polling had taken place.
“This Bengal election has been very special for another reason as well. You must remember what kind of news used to come during Bengal elections. Violence, fear, and deaths of innocent people. But this time, the entire country heard a new piece of news that peaceful voting took place in West Bengal. For the first time, not a single innocent citizen lost their life in election violence. In this grand festival of democracy, it was not the sound of guns, but the voice of the people that echoed. For the first time, it was not fear, but democracy that triumphed,” he said.
He also took a swipe at the Samajwadi Party, linking electoral outcomes to issues of women’s representation.
“The Samajwadi Party, which has blocked women’s reservation in Parliament, will also have to face the wrath of the women of Uttar Pradesh. The anti-women Samajwadi Party will not be able to wash away its sins by doing anything,” PM Modi said.
‘Trust in politics of performance,’ says PM
Calling the results a broader endorsement of governance, Modi said the mandate reflected faith in democratic values and development-focused politics.
“As a party worker, I share the joy of every BJP worker. Today is a special day in many ways. It marks the announcement of a bright future for the country. This is a day of trust. Trust in India’s great democracy. Trust in the politics of performance… Trust in the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat’,” he said.
PM Modi also assured Bengal that the BJP would work for the state’s development and security.
“I want to assure every citizen of Bengal that BJP will work relentlessly for the better future of Bengal. Now, in Bengal, women will be safe, youths will get employment, and migration will stop. In the first Cabinet meeting, the Ayushman Yojana will be cleared…And strict action will be taken against the infiltrators,” he said.
“A new chapter has been added to Bengal’s destiny from today. From today, Bengal is free from fear and filled with the assurance of development,” he added.
Assam, Puducherry results show continued support for NDA
Referring to results beyond West Bengal, Modi said voters had reaffirmed their confidence in the NDA’s governance model.
“In 2021, we presented the vision of Best Puducherry to the people of Puducherry. The people of Puducherry expressed their faith in that vision and blessed us. Over the past five years, our NDA government has worked with complete dedication and commitment to accelerate this vision. And today, once again, the people of Puducherry have expressed their trust in the NDA,” he said.
On Assam, he described the outcome as part of a continuing political journey, noting that the BJP and NDA had secured a third consecutive term in the state.
‘Lotus has bloomed from Gangotri to Gangasagar’
Expanding the political narrative, PM Modi linked the party’s success across the Ganga belt.
“…with Bengal’s victory, the lotus has bloomed from Gangotri to the Gangasagar. Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and now West Bengal. Today, these states, nestled around the Ganga, have the BJP and NDA in power,” he said.
He also invoked Syama Prasad Mookerjee, saying, “Today, as a BJP worker, another thought keeps coming to my mind. The soul of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee must be at so much peace today.”
Amit Shah, Nitin Nabin hail BJP mandate
Union Home Minister Amit Shah described the Bengal result as a “historic victory” and credited the party’s rise to the struggle and sacrifices of BJP workers.
“This historic victory for the BJP in Bengal is the result of the sacrifices, struggles, and martyrdom of our countless workers. It is a triumph of the patience of those families who, even while enduring violence, never abandoned the saffron flag,” Shah posted on X.
BJP national president Nitin Nabin also called the results a “historic mandate” and said the outcome reflected public trust in PM Modi’s leadership.
“This is a historic moment for us… The party has received a historic mandate in four states and one UT. I thank the public for bestowing their trust on the BJP. The results of West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry have shown that the public of the nation trusts the leadership of PM Modi,” he said.
PM thanks Election Commission, security forces
The Prime Minister acknowledged the role of institutions and personnel involved in the electoral process.
“I heartily congratulate the Election Commission, all the brothers and sisters involved in the voting process, and especially the security forces. History will forever remember your contribution to maintaining the dignity of Indian democracy,” he said.
BJP leaders described the results as a major political moment, attributing the outcome to continued public trust in the party’s leadership.
