Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi over his remarks during the Lok Sabha debate on Operation Sindoor, alleging that Gogoi was speaking “on behalf of Pakistan.”
In a post on X Sarma wrote, “The speech delivered by our MP from Jorhat in Parliament yesterday proved beyond doubt that he acts on behalf of Pakistan. His secret trip and close ties with the Pakistani establishment speak volumes. With his wife and both kids holding foreign citizenship, he can leave India any time. He is a disgrace to Assam and a betrayal of our pride as proud Indians.”
The remarks came a day after Gogoi, who is the Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, questioned the central government over the objectives and outcomes of Operation Sindoor—India’s military response to the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of Indian soldiers.
Speaking during the debate, Gogoi said, “They said we attacked them inside their homes. But they are also saying Operation Sindoor is incomplete because Pakistan can do it again in the future. Then how was the operation a success?”
He further asked, “When will we take back Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, if not today, then when?”
Gogoi also raised queries about the number of Indian fighter jets lost during the conflict and urged Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who was present in the House, to provide clarity.
The Congress MP’s remarks were picked up by Pakistani media, drawing criticism from Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika, who accused Gogoi of making statements that embolden India’s adversaries.
Operation Sindoor was launched earlier this month as India’s retaliatory action following a deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam. The government has described it as a strategic and limited strike targeting terror infrastructure across the Line of Control.
