Widespread rains accompanied by thunderstorms were witnessed across multiple areas in the Delhi-NCR on Tuesday, July 28, as thick clouds covered the skyline, providing much-needed relief from heat and humidity.
An Orange alert has been issued for parts of the national capital by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), indicating the possibility of further rains along with strong winds in the coming hours, IANS reported.
As per the IMD data, Safdarjung, the city’s primary weather observatory, recorded 32.4 mm of rainfall until 8:30 a.m., while the Ridge received 37.6 mm, Lodhi Road 36.7 mm, Ayanagar 4 mm, and Palam 0.8 mm.
During the morning, multiple areas in Delhi, including the Kartavya Path vicinity, saw continuous showers, with the rainfall offering major respite from the oppressive humidity that had prevailed over the past few days.
Civic authorities have asked people to remain cautious, as intense spells of rain could result in waterlogging in low-lying areas and slow-moving traffic on major roads.
In its latest bulletin, the weather department predicted generally cloudy conditions throughout the day.
Meteorologists have said that wet weather conditions are expected to persist through the week, with moderate rainfall possible on Wednesday, while intermittent showers, thunderstorms, and overcast skies are likely to continue over the coming days.
The increased monsoon activity is further expected to bring down daytime temperatures significantly. On Monday, Safdarjung recorded a maximum temperature of 38.1 degrees Celsius, but weather experts anticipate a drop of around 2–3 degrees Celsius over the next several days.
Also, the air quality in the national capital remained favourable amid the rainy conditions. As per the latest data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 74 at 1 p.m., placing it in the “satisfactory” category.
