Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Monday announced government jobs for the family members of those who lost their lives in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Saini made the announcement during the Monsoon session of the Haryana Legislative Assembly. According to the state government’s data, 121 people from Haryana were killed in the 1984 riots.

Earlier this year, the Delhi Government had also distributed job letters to family members of victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

These appointment letters were distributed by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa at an event in New Delhi.

Thousands of people belonging to the Sikh community were killed in the 1984 riots that broke out in Delhi and across the country following the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards.

The ruling BJP often claims that the anti-Sikh riots were organised by the Congress party.

In February this year, former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar was convicted by Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case linked to the killing of a father-son duo in the Saraswati Vihar area during the riots.

Kumar is already serving a life sentence in another 1984 anti-Sikh riots case in Delhi Cantt.
