Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Rome on the final leg of his five-nation tour to an enthusiastic welcome from the Indian diaspora, setting the tone for a visit that blended strategic diplomacy with cultural warmth, artistic celebration and a viral moment that captured social media attention across countries.
Landing in the Italian capital on Tuesday at the invitation of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Modi was received at the airport by Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani, reflecting the significance Rome has attached to the visit as both nations seek to deepen their growing strategic partnership.
Soon after his arrival, Modi was greeted by members of the Indian community in Italy, whose energetic reception highlighted the enduring emotional and cultural bonds shared by the diaspora with India. The evening evolved into a showcase of Indian heritage as Italian artists performed classical dance forms including Kathak, Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam before the Prime Minister, symbolising the growing cultural resonance of India far beyond its borders.
The atmosphere became even more immersive as Italian musicians presented Indian classical music through instruments such as the Santoor, Tabla, Bansuri and Sitar, underlining the expanding people-to-people connect between India and Italy and the global appeal of India’s artistic traditions.
Officials accompanying the visit described it as “scripting a new chapter in the India-Italy Strategic Partnership,” as New Delhi and Rome look to strengthen cooperation in areas ranging from trade and investment to defense manufacturing, clean energy, innovation, technology and science.
In a post on X after meeting Meloni, Modi wrote, “Met PM Meloni in Rome last evening. Looking forward to our talks later today. May the India-Italy friendship keep growing!”
Yet it was an unexpectedly simple gesture that became one of the defining public moments of the visit. Ahead of their official engagements, Modi gifted Meloni a packet of Melody toffee, triggering a cheerful exchange that quickly went viral online.
In a video shared on social media, Meloni was heard smiling and saying, “PM Modi brought us a gift. It is Melody,” while holding the packet of chocolates presented by the Indian Prime Minister. She later captioned the post, “Thank you for the gift,” prompting thousands of reactions online, with users praising the easy camaraderie and personal chemistry between the two leaders.
Behind the lighter moments, however, lies a relationship of growing strategic importance. India and Italy have steadily expanded bilateral ties under the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029, which aims to deepen cooperation in sectors such as clean energy, defense, trade, innovation, science and technology, and cultural exchanges.
Economic engagement between the two countries has also gained momentum. Bilateral trade touched USD 16.77 billion in 2025, while cumulative Italian foreign direct investment in India stood at USD 3.66 billion between April 2000 and September 2025, reflecting increasing confidence and collaboration between businesses on both sides.
The Rome visit marks the conclusion of Modi’s broader five-nation diplomatic outreach that also included the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway. Throughout the tour, the Prime Minister focused on strengthening India’s strategic partnerships in Europe and advancing cooperation in sustainability, emerging technologies, energy security and digital infrastructure.
Before arriving in Italy, Modi attended the India-Nordic Summit in Norway, where India and the Nordic countries launched a Green Technology and Innovation Strategic Partnership aimed at expanding cooperation in sustainable development and future technologies amid an increasingly uncertain geopolitical climate.
Still, the Italy leg of the journey has stood apart for its unique blend of policy and personality — where classical Indian music echoed through Rome, Italian artists performed centuries-old Indian dance traditions, and a packet of Melody toffee became an unlikely symbol of contemporary diplomacy in the social media age.
