In a significant political development, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati has begun a renewed effort to strengthen her party by bringing back influential former leaders.
As part of this strategy, former senior BSP leader Jay Prakash Singh has rejoined the party, sources confirmed on Saturday.
Following his return, Mayawati appointed Singh as the party in-charge for Odisha and West Bengal.
Sources said that talking to some journalists, Singh disclosed that he met Mayawati in Delhi on Friday, where she entrusted him with his new responsibilities. “Behenji told me that with the West Bengal Assembly elections approaching, it is important to strengthen the organisation. I am grateful to her for giving me this opportunity again,” Singh said.
He further pledged his complete loyalty to Mayawati and the BSP, adding that he would soon head to West Bengal to expand the party’s organisation and spread its ideology among the people.
Singh had earlier held key positions as National Vice-President and National Coordinator of the BSP, and his comeback is expected to boost the party’s organisational strength.
Jay Prakash Singh was expelled from the BSP in 2018 after he made a controversial remark against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, referring to him as the “child of a foreign mother” (Sonia Gandhi). At that time, Mayawati took strict action and expelled Singh from the party, accusing him of collecting donations in her name.
In recent months, Singh publicly apologised to Mayawati for his past remarks.
Sources indicate that after consultations with senior leaders Satish Chandra Mishra and Aakash Anand, Singh met Mayawati in Delhi, leading to his official reinstatement on Friday.
Political observers view Singh’s return as part of Mayawati’s broader “Mission 2027”, through which she aims to strenthen the BSP’s grassroots network by bringing back experienced and influential leaders ahead of the upcoming elections.
