The Delhi University is witnessing its biggest democratic exercise on Thursday as votes were being cast in the students’ union election.

Amid Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s national “vote chori” allegations against the BJP, NSUI presidential candidate Joslyn Nandita Choudhary also levelled similar charges in the DUSU polls.

She alleged that blue ink was marked in front of ABVP candidate Aryan Maan’s name on EVMs at Kirori Mal and Hansraj colleges, claiming she witnessed it herself. Choudhary further accused that thugs and miscreants outside the colleges were attacking her supporters and NSUI workers.

Polling is being held in two phases to accommodate different groups of students. Day scholars voted from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM, while evening college students will cast their votes between 3:00 PM and 7:30 PM.

The split schedule has been designed to ease crowding and ensure that students from evening courses also get a fair chance to participate.

Nearly 2.8 lakh Delhi University students are eligible to vote in this year’s DUSU elections, spread across 52 colleges and departments.

To handle the large turnout, 195 polling stations have been set up and more than 700 electronic voting machines (EVMs) deployed. Officials say it is among the largest student elections in the country, both in scale and political sphere.

Students are prioritising issues such as hostel shortages, rising fees, campus security, women’s safety, and the implementation of NEP 2020. Independent candidates, meanwhile, are injecting fresh perspectives into the polls, widening the scope of student debate.

Polling concludes this evening, with counting scheduled for tomorrow (September 19). The results will determine the leadership of one of India’s most influential student unions.
