Bihar: Rohini Acharya, the daughter of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, has appealed to Nitish Kumar’s government to implement systemic reforms to ensure that daughters’ rights are protected in the parental home. Her remarks have brought the spotlight back on the deepening rift within the family.

In a post shared on X on Thursday, Rohini said daughters must have assurance that their parental home is a safe place where they can return without fear or judgment. She argued that while government schemes for women are welcome, they fall short of addressing deep-rooted gender inequalities.

Acknowledging Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s welfare initiatives, such as the distribution of Rs. 10,000 to women and cycles, Acharya said such measures remain inadequate in tackling the systemic issues that hinder women’s empowerment.

“The government’s and society’s primary responsibility should be to take concrete steps to protect the equal rights of daughters, especially in the face of social and familial apathy,” she wrote.
Calling for urgent and widespread change, she said Bihar’s deeply rooted patriarchal attitudes continue to restrict women both socially and politically. “Every daughter has the right to grow up with the assurance that her parental home is a safe place, where she can return without any fear, guilt, shame, or having to explain herself to anyone,” she added.

Acharya further stressed that strengthening protective mechanisms for women is not just an administrative obligation but essential to preventing future exploitation and harassment.

Growing strain within Lalu’s family

This comes a month after Rohini had announced  to quit politics and disown her family. She had alleged harassment and humiliation by her brother, Tejaswi Yadav and his associates. She claimed she was asked to leave the family home and faced verbal abuse and threats.

Rohini said on 15 November, “I have no family. You can go and ask this to Sanjay Yadav, Rameez, and Tejaswi Yadav. They are the ones who threw me out of the family. They don’t want to take any responsibility… The whole nation is asking why the party failed like this. When you name Sanjay Yadav and Rameez, you are thrown out of the house, disgraced, abused, and even hit…”

Rohini’s decision to quit the party and disown her family followed RJD’s poor performance in the recent Bihar Assembly elections.
