Cracks surface in Jharkhand Congress after jumbo PCC revamp

Internal tensions have begun surfacing within the Jharkhand Congress soon after the announcement of the party’s new 314-member Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC), exposing signs of unease over the organisational reshuffle.

What the party leadership projected as an exercise in social and political balancing, inspired by Rahul Gandhi’s “jitni hissedari, utni bhagidari” (“greater representation should mean greater participation”) formula, has instead triggered resentment among sections of senior and long-serving leaders.

The discontent first became visible after state Finance Minister Radha Krishna Kishore publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the new organisational structure. Soon after, his son Prashant Kishore resigned from the post of Pradesh Congress secretary.

The latest resignation came from senior Congress leader Jagdish Sahu, a four-time Pradesh Congress secretary, who stepped down while accusing the organisation of sidelining experienced and committed workers.

In a strongly worded statement, Sahu alleged that individuals associated with the party’s salaried structure had been accommodated in organisational posts, while grassroots workers were ignored. He also questioned appointing leaders already holding positions in boards, corporations and committees to key organisational responsibilities.

Sahu, however, said he would continue to work as an ordinary Congress worker despite his disappointment with the new committee structure.

Amid the growing unease, Bermo MLA Kumar Jaimangal also posted a cryptic message on social media in apparent support of the new PCC structure, signalling emerging factional alignments within the state unit. Though he did not directly name any leader, the post was widely seen in political circles as backing the current organisational leadership.

The developments have fuelled speculation about deeper factional undercurrents within the state unit at a time when the Congress, a key constituent of the ruling alliance in Jharkhand, is attempting organisational consolidation ahead of future electoral challenges.

Defending the reshuffle, Pradesh Congress spokesperson Sonal Shanti said the committee had been formed after “careful consideration and balanced representation.” He maintained that dissatisfaction was natural when expectations remained unmet but rejected suggestions of any serious internal crisis.

The latest episode has once again highlighted the Congress party’s recurring challenge of balancing social representation, political accommodation and organisational loyalty within an expanding structure.
