A court in Parasia, Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh, on Friday ordered a 10-day police remand for Ranganathan Govindan, the owner of Sresan Pharmaceuticals of Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu, the company that manufactured the now-banned toxic cough syrup Coldrif, suspected to have caused kidney failures and the consequent deaths of around two dozen children in Madhya Pradesh.

A large crowd gathered at the court when the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Madhya Pradesh Police produced Govindan on Friday evening.

Sources said some people attempted to attack Govindan, but the police immediately whisked him away to safety.

The court of Additional Sessions Judge Gautam Gurjar sent Govindan to a 10-day police remand.

Lawyers in Parasia have refused to represent or defend Govindan or any other accused in the case.

People present at the court also raised slogans demanding the death penalty for Govindan and other accused.

Following the children’s deaths, an FIR was registered at Parasia against the owner of the syrup manufacturing company. Subsequently, the MP Police SIT arrested Govindan from Chennai at around 1.30 am on Thursday.
