In a big boost to India’s military strength and defence preparedness, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, cleared major defence purchase proposals worth about Rs. 2.38 lakh crore. The approvals, given under the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN), cover a wide range of equipment for the Army, Air Force and Coast Guard.
The latest decisions are aimed at strengthening India’s combat readiness across land, air and sea. The government said the new equipment will improve firepower, surveillance, mobility and communication systems.
Air Force gets S-400, transport aircraft boost
For the Indian Air Force, the council cleared the purchase of Medium Transport Aircraft to replace ageing fleets like AN-32 and IL-76. These aircraft will support troop movement, logistics and emergency operations.
The approval also includes the S-400 long-range surface-to-air missile system, which can detect and destroy incoming aerial threats from long distances, protecting key areas.
Remotely Piloted Strike Aircraft have also been cleared, which will be used for precision attacks and intelligence missions. In addition, the overhaul of Su-30 aero engines has been approved to extend aircraft life and maintain operational readiness.
Army to get advanced weapons and systems
For the Indian Army, the DAC approved several key systems, including air defence tracking, tank ammunition and artillery upgrades.
The Air Defence Tracked System will allow real-time monitoring and response to aerial threats. High-capacity radio relay systems will ensure strong and reliable communication even in difficult conditions.
The Dhanush Gun System is expected to boost long-range artillery strikes with better accuracy. New surveillance systems that do not depend on runways will help monitor enemy movement more effectively. Advanced anti-tank ammunition has also been cleared to increase firepower against armoured threats.
Coast Guard to get high-speed hovercraft
The Indian Coast Guard will get Heavy Duty Air Cushion Vehicles, or hovercraft, for coastal operations. These will be used for fast patrolling, rescue missions, reconnaissance and transporting personnel and supplies.
Record approvals in current financial year
The Defence Ministry said that in the financial year 2025–26, the DAC has cleared 55 proposals worth ₹6.73 lakh crore. Contracts for 503 projects worth ₹2.28 lakh crore have already been signed this year.
According to officials, this is the highest level of defence approvals and contracts in any single financial year so far.
