Odisha: BJP confident of big win in Nuapada bypoll
The BJP is upbeat about its performance in the Nuapada by-election, the first it has contested in the state since coming to power. He argued that for over two decades, residents were neglected under the previous administration led by CM Naveen Patnaik and dismissed Patnaik’s claims of “vote manipulation” as a sign of political frustration.
He further pointed to the Subhadra scheme as a key factor in mobilising women voters, asserting that large turnouts reflected confidence in BJP’s pro-women and pro-weaker sections policies. The political spotlight today is firmly on Nagrota and Budgam as counting begins for the much-watched bypolls. Both seats have seen intense campaigns and high public interest.
In Nagrota, the fight was straightforward but fierce: National Conference (NC) vs BJP. The seat fell vacant after BJP leader Devender Singh Rana, who won last year, passed away in October. His daughter, Devyani Rana, stepped in as the party’s candidate hoping to retain her father’s legacy. NC, determined not to let the seat slip away, put all its energy into the contest.
Budgam in Kashmir witnessed a similar head-to-head clash, this time between NC and PDP. With no third major party in the fray, voters had a very clear choice.
Security was tight across both regions. Police and CRPF teams were deployed in large numbers in Jammu district to ensure smooth counting. Polling took place on Tuesday, with Nagrota recording an impressive 75.08% turnout, while Budgam saw 50.02%.
All eyes now remain on the final results, which will shape the political mood in both Jammu and Kashmir.
