Amid trade tensions with the United States over Russian oil purchase, External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr S Jaishankar is expected to visit Russia later this month.
According to reports, Jaishankar will hold talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on August 21.
The two leaders are likely to discuss bilateral ties and issues of mutual interest.
This comes days after US President Donald Trump imposed 50 per cent tariffs on India – 25 per cent reciprocal tariffs and a 25 per cent penalty for buying Russian oil.
India said that it imports oil from Russia, keeping in mind the energy needs of 140 crore Indians, and called out Washington for its own trade with Russia.
Last week, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
Doval, who was in Russia to discuss cooperation between India and Russia in multilateral formats, also held talks with the Secretary of the Russian Security Council, Sergey Shoigu.
Doval had also announced that the dates of Russian President Putin’s visit to India have been finalised.
