The Congress party on Saturday approved an amendment in its constitution ensuring 50 per cent reservation for Scheduled Castes, Schedule Tribes, Other Backward Classes, women and minorities in all party positions including PCC and AICC delegates.

Veteran leader and former Union minister Ambika Soni who chaired the committee to suggest necessary amendments in the party constitution proposed the amendment on the second day of 85th Congress Plenary session at Nava Raipur in Chhattisgarh.

Elaborating on the proposed amendment, Congress leader Randeep Surjewala called the move as ‘Samajik Nyay Ka Agaz’. He said that the Ambika Soni led committee has proposed 50 per cent reservation for the members belonging to Scheduled Castes, Schedules Tribes, Other Backward Castes, minorities and women in all party posts from Congress Working Committee to PCC delegates to AICC delegates.

The committee further proposed increasing the strength of CWC from 23 to 35, introducing paperless membership and record, mandatory introduction of mother’s and wife’s name in membership documents and automatic elevation of elected representatives of Panchayat Raj institutions and Cooperative Societies as PCC delegates. The proposals were approved unanimously.

Surjewala and Soni claimed that the amendments to include more and more people from across the board was inspired by Rahul Gandhi who witnessed the need for such a step during his Bharat Jodo Yatra.

The move shows how Modi juggernaut and micro social engineering by RSS to galvanise its Hindu stronghold has sent shock waves across the political spectrum including the grand old party which is replete with internal strife and continued desertions by many of its prominent young leaders.
