The LTC gallery at Bikaner House opened on October 9 for Rhythmic Sagas, the first solo exhibition in Delhi by globally renowned Sri Lankan artist Raja Segar. Presented by IndiGalleria and curated by Aakshat Sinha, the show will be open to the public until October 18, attracting artists, collectors, and students.
The inauguration was attended by H.E. Ms. Mahishini Colonne, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka, and Indian artist Arpana Caur.
The exhibition revolves around music and human connections. Segar said, “I like this theme of music. It lets me play with colours on my canvas.” Each painting reflects his attention to form, light, and proportion, emphasizing method over theory. Segar’s work is built on geometry and what he calls a “refractive” technique, inspired by how light travels through different densities. For him, painting is a craft, not a mystery.
Among the works, Segar highlighted a triptych titled The Band of Michael Jackson, painted in Delhi. “It’s again on music,” he said. Other paintings draw from everyday life in Sri Lanka, including tea pluckers and street musicians, alongside works inspired by his time in India, such as scenes around Mumbai’s Church Gate station. Some of these appear in his coffee-table book ‘Segar: Autobiography with Paintings’.
Curator Aakshat Sinha said, “Segar’s works communicate directly with viewers through balance, motion, and a quiet humour. His art doesn’t just hang on the wall; it converses with you.”
Visitors to Rhythmic Sagas can see Segar’s methodical, hands-on approach in every piece, where movement and rhythm are captured through careful form and colour rather than spectacle.
