Pop drama alert! Just when fans were still decoding lyrics and hunting Easter eggs, a fresh controversy has stepped onto the stage. It’s a legal fight over a name. And yes, it involves none other than Taylor Swift and her latest album ‘The Life of a Showgirl’.

A writer says the superstar didn’t just drop an album, she allegedly stepped on someone else’s brand in the process.

Lawsuit lands in court

A writer named Maren Wade has filed a lawsuit in California federal court accusing Swift and UMG Recordings of trademark infringement, false designation, and unfair competition. Wade is asking for damages and wants the court to stop Swift from using the album title altogether.

Her legal team says this isn’t just about words, it’s about years of work. Wade’s lawyer argued that a solo performer who spent over a decade building a brand shouldn’t see it vanish when someone bigger enters the scene.

A brand built over years

Wade’s claim goes back to 2014, when she started a column titled “Confessions of a Showgirl” in the Las Vegas Weekly. The column detailed her life as a performer.

Over time, that concept grew into much more; a podcast, live stage performances, and musical shows blending pop and jazz. Wade says she built a full identity around the “showgirl” theme, even securing trademark protection covering theatrical productions, television, and live entertainment.

She also appeared on America’s Got Talent.

The album that sparked the dispute

Then came Swift’s twelfth album, The Life of a Showgirl. According to the complaint, the rollout was loud and fast; merchandise, labels, packaging, and retail branding all used the name within weeks.

Wade claims this targeted the same audience she had been cultivating for years. She argues that consumers now think she copied Swift, rather than the other way around, something she says is damaging her reputation and business.
