Following the underwhelming theatrical performance of Taapsee Pannu-starrer ‘Assi’ not meeting expectations, trade experts have weighed in on why the film struggled to connect strongly with audiences at the box office.
Both trade analyst Girish Wankhede and distributor Manoj Desai believe that while the film had merit, several factors prevented it from translating into solid box office numbers.

Audience connect missing
Sharing his assessment, Girish Wankhede told IANS that the simplest explanation behind the film’s performance is the audience response.
According to him, when collections remain low, it usually reflects that viewers did not fully connect with the film or understand what it was offering.
He said, “It’s a simple reason. When a film doesn’t do well, it means the audience didn’t like it. They didn’t understand what kind of film it was.”
He pointed out that stronger marketing might have improved footfall, suggesting that awareness around the film remained limited in the crucial opening days.
“If the marketing had been stronger, more people might have come to the cinemas, but the audience wasn’t fully aware.”, he added.
Mixed reviews and limited pull
Wankhede also noted that the film received divided critical feedback, which may have impacted its momentum, “Apart from that, the reviews were very mixed. Some people praised the film, some didn’t.”
He added that while Taapsee Pannu is a credible performer, expecting the film to rely entirely on her star power may have been unrealistic. In his view, multiple small factors together contributed to the film’s slow run.
“Taapsee Pannu is the main lead actress of the film, but she is not capable of pulling a film entirely on her shoulders. There are many such reasons why the film didn’t perform well.”
Box office trend tells the story
Explaining the numbers, Wankhede highlighted that the film did not show the kind of growth typically driven by positive word of mouth.
He observed that the opening day collection was around Rs 1 crore, followed by roughly Rs 1.6 crore on both the second and third days.
The flat trend, he said, usually signals that the film hasn’t strongly resonated with viewers, “When a film doesn’t show growth, it indicates that it hasn’t connected with the audience.”
Title confusion also a factor
Distributor Manoj Desai echoed similar sentiments while also praising Taapsee’s potential. Calling her a promising actor, he admitted he remains a fan of her work. However, he pointed to the film’s title ‘Assi’ as a possible hurdle.
“Well, the girl is very promising. I believe in her. I am a big fan of hers.”
Desai also pointed out that even people within the distribution circuit were unsure about the meaning of the title, which may have affected curiosity and recall among the general audience.
“And yes, one of the main things was the title – ‘Assi’. People were asking us, even our managing staff was asking, what does ‘Assi’ mean? I myself would like to know what it stands for.”
Not a complete washout
Despite the underwhelming performance, Desai maintained that the film cannot be labelled a total disaster, noting that audience response has been mixed rather than uniformly negative.
He concluded, “Audience comes and goes, and anyhow, the film did not work well, but it was not a complete disaster either.”
