Trigger Warning: The film world woke up to a heavy silence on Friday. A young actor, full of promise and unfinished dreams, was suddenly gone. Akhil Viswanath, known for his performance in the award-winning film ‘Chola’, was found dead at his home. He was young. He was talented. And his story feels painfully unfinished.
The news spread quickly leaving friends, co-actors, film lovers shocked and confused.
A question that hurts everyone
Actor Manoj Kumar was among the first to share the heartbreaking news. His words on social media said what many were feeling but could not say out loud: “Why did you do it, Akhil?”
Soon after, messages of grief began pouring in from across the Malayalam film industry.
“I am heartbroken,” says director Sanal Kumar Sasidharan
Filmmaker Sanal Kumar Sasidharan, who directed ‘Chola’, shared an emotional note mourning Akhil’s death. He said it was impossible for him to accept that Akhil would choose to end his life.
Sanal spoke about Akhil’s journey with deep respect. He reminded everyone that Akhil had fought poverty to enter cinema. His role in ‘Chola’ was meant to open many doors. Sadly, the attention and opportunities that were expected never truly came.
“I can’t believe this,” Sanal wrote urging Akhil’s close friends to look deeper into what might have driven him to take such a drastic step.
Support from co-stars and the film fraternity
Actor Joju George, who acted alongside Akhil in ‘Chola’, also shared his condolences on Instagram. Others from the industry expressed shock and sadness remembering Akhil as a quiet hardworking actor with rare screen presence.
Akhil Viswanath: From child actor to festival films
Akhil’s acting journey began early. While still in high school, he won the state television award for Best Child Actor for a telefilm. It was a sign of things to come.
Years later, while working at a mobile phone shop, life took a turn. He was selected for ‘Chola’, a film that would travel the world. Starring Nimisha Sajayan and Joju George, the film won praise at international festivals including Venice, Geneva, and Tokyo.
Akhil later appeared in ‘Operation Java’. He was also preparing for a new role in a film titled OTT, hoping for a fresh chapter.
