The world of light-hearted fiction lost one of its brightest voices this week. Sophie Kinsella, writer who made millions smile with bestselling ‘Shopaholic’ series, has passed away at the age of 55. The news was shared through a message on her official Instagram account on Wednesday.
The post, written by her family, painted a picture of a peaceful farewell. “She died peacefully, with her final days filled with her true loves: family and music and warmth and Christmas and joy,” the message said.
Her family remembered her as someone full of “radiance and love of life,” even as she faced illness with remarkable strength. They added that she never took her success for granted and always felt grateful for the love of her readers.
Kinsella’s impact on modern romantic comedy fiction is hard to measure. Her books have sold more than 50 million copies across 60 countries. She became a household name with the ‘Shopaholic’ novels, the adventures of Becky Bloomwood, a lovable journalist with an irresistible shopping problem. The first two books turned into the 2009 Hollywood film ‘Confessions of a Shopaholic’, starring Isla Fisher.

But her creativity didn’t stop there. Her novel ‘Can You Keep a Secret?’ also made it to the big screen in 2019, bringing another one of her charming stories to life with Alexandra Daddario and Tyler Hoechlin in the lead roles.
Kinsella began her writing journey early. At just 24, she released her first book, ‘The Tennis Party’, under her full name, Madeleine Sophie Wickham, while working as a financial journalist. Over the years, she wrote six novels under the name Madeleine Wickham and later published 18 more as Sophie Kinsella.
Her final book, ‘What Does It Feel Like?’, came out in October 2024 and offered a deeply personal reflection on her cancer diagnosis.
