Sophie Gregoire has spoken honestly about how she is dealing with her ex-husband former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s new relationship with global pop star Katy Perry.
She shared her thoughts during a recent episode of the podcast ‘Arlene Is Alone’, where she opened up about emotions, healing, choosing peace.
Sophie said it is “completely normal” to feel something when an ex-partner begins a new chapter with someone else. She explained that being human means being affected by things, especially when there is so much public attention on the situation.
“We’re human beings and stuff affects us. Normal,” she said. But she also added that what truly matters is how one chooses to respond. “How you react to stuff is your decision. So I choose to try to listen to the music instead of the noise.”
The conversation became more emotional when Sophie described how she handles her own reactions. She said she still cries, still gets upset, still laughs but she tries to stay aware of the space between what she feels and how she behaves.
“Does that mean I don’t have emotions? That I don’t cry, scream, laugh? No,” she said. “But it’s my decision after that, between the emotion and the reaction.”

Her comments come shortly after Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry made their first official public appearance as a couple. The two stepped out together in Paris on October 25 for Perry’s birthday celebration. They were first seen together earlier in July while walking their dogs in Canada which sparked worldwide curiosity about their relationship.
Sophie and Trudeau announced their separation in 2023 after 18 years of marriage. Even though their marriage ended, Sophie said she is learning to let herself feel every emotion without slipping into what she calls “reactive mode.”
She believes it is important to feel everything fully but respond thoughtfully. “I know for a fact how important it is, as a mental health advocate, to feel those emotions,” she shared.
She also spoke about a lesson she has learned at 50: people act from what they carry inside. She said understanding that helps her protect her own happiness. “People will meet life as where they are inside of them… It’s your choice to see that and be like, ‘How am I going to let that affect my happiness?’”
Despite everything, Sophie said that she and Trudeau are committed to raising their children together: Xavier, 18, Ella-Grace, 16, and Hadrien, 11.
She described their family as something they built with love and something they both want to protect. “We have separate lives, but we have one family life,” she said. “Our family is our greatest creation and we’re going to feed it together, no matter if we’re on different life paths.”
