Media personality T.S. Madison had criticized the rapper for his reaction to a brief same-sex relationship depicted in the movie.

“I was just caught off guard and had no answer for my grandsons,” Snoop wrote. He added that his gay friends had reached out to him with support and understanding. “My bad for not knowing the answers for a 6 yr old … teach me how to learn I’m not perfect,” he continued.
These remarks from Snoop Dogg followed his appearance on the August 20 episode of Dr Sarah Fontenot’s ‘It’s Giving’ podcast, where he described taking his grandson to see ‘Lightyear’. During the film, one of the female characters was shown to be in a same-sex marriage and had children with her wife.
Snoop recounted his confusion during the movie. “Why my grandson in the middle of the movie like, ‘Papa Snoop, how she have a baby with a woman? She a woman,’” he said. “I didn’t come here for this s-t, I just came to watch the goddamn movie.”
He admitted that the scene left him unsure of how to respond. “So it’s like, f—k me, I’m scared to go to the movies now. Like, y’all throwing me in the middle of s—t that I don’t have an answer for,” Snoop said. “It threw me for a loop. We have to show that at this age? Like, they’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.”

The rapper’s comments sparked immediate backlash online, with many accusing him of being homophobic.
The conversation also caught the attention of Lauren Gunderson, a writer for ‘Lightyear’, who shared her perspective on social media.
Gunderson explained that including a same-sex couple in the film was intentional and important. “As we wrote early versions of what became ‘LIGHTYEAR’, a key character needed a partner, and it was so natural to write ‘she’ instead of ‘he,’” she wrote in a post on Threads. “As small as that detail is in the film, I knew the representational effect it could have. Small line, big deal. I was elated that they kept it.”
The writer added, “I had very little to do with the final script. But I was proud to see a happy queer couple (even for a few seconds) onscreen. I know they got a lot of s—t for this inclusion, but stuff like this matters because beautiful love like this exists.”
In ‘Lightyear’, Alisha, one of the film’s central characters, is in a committed relationship with another woman.
The couple shares a brief kiss on screen, a moment that has generated controversy in multiple countries. Nations including the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia banned the movie because of the scene.
Even in the United States, the scene sparked criticism from some right-wing political figures, who accused Disney of promoting a “pro-LGBTQ+ agenda.”
Despite the backlash, many fans and LGBTQ+ advocates praised the inclusion as a small but meaningful step for representation in mainstream children’s media.
