Bollywood actor Shekhar Suman took a walk down memory lane, sharing a heartfelt post featuring Rekha on social media about his debut film, ‘Utsav’, which hit the screens in the 1980s.
The actor expressed deep gratitude to the people who shaped his early career, writing, “Thank you Shash ji for the most stupendous break of my life as the lead actor in your magnum-opus ‘UTSAV’, my debut film opposite the prima donna Rekha. Thank you Girish Karnad, the Rhodes Scholar, creator of ‘Tughlaq’, for presenting me so well. Thank you Rekha for agreeing to work opposite a rank newcomer. I wouldn’t be what I am without any one of you. Thank you universe for accepting me.”
Shekhar’s journey to this landmark role was swift and almost cinematic in itself. In an interview last year, he recalled landing ‘Utsav’ within just 15 days of arriving in Mumbai. It was actress Shammi who played a crucial role, convincing legendary actor-producer Shashi Kapoor and director Girish Karnad to give the young 21-year-old a shot.

A quick meeting later, and Shekhar Suman found himself cast opposite Rekha, performing challenging and intimate scenes that immediately drew attention to his acting talent.
The film itself was bold for its time. Rekha portrayed a confident and sensual courtesan, delivering performances that were both provocative and memorable, making ‘Utsav’ one of the most controversial films of her career.
While Shekhar Suman started with a notable Bollywood debut, he eventually became a household name through television. He starred in popular TV shows like ‘Reporter’ and ‘Dekh Bhai Dekh’.
In addition to television, Shekhar Suman featured in several notable films, including ‘Manav Hatya’, ‘Naache Mayuri’, ‘Sansar’, ‘Anubhav’, ‘Tridev’, ‘Pati Parmeshwar’, ‘Chor Machaye Shor’, and ‘Ranbhoomi’.
Over the years, he also became a trusted face in judging comedy shows like ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge’, ‘Comedy Circus’, and ‘Comedy Superstar’, sharing the panel with celebrities such as Navjot Singh Sidhu.
Recently, Shekhar made a comeback on OTT platforms with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s series ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’.
