French singer and actor Patrick Bruel was formally charged with rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment on Wednesday, June 11, 2026. The charges were filed by a judge at the court in Nanterre, a suburb of Paris. The Nanterre prosecutor’s office confirmed that the charges relate to nine victims and involve incidents said to have taken place between 2010 and 2019. Bruel has denied all allegations.
48 hours in custody
Bruel spent 48 hours in custody after being taken in for questioning on Monday. He appeared before the court in Nanterre dressed in a black sweater and dark grey jeans, looking tired. After the hearing, prosecutors requested that he be remanded in pre-trial detention. The judge rejected that request. Bruel was released under judicial supervision, his lawyer Fanny Colin confirmed.
How the investigation began
The investigation initially began after three women accused Bruel of sexual assault and attempted rape allegedly committed in 1997, 2000 and 2001. During the investigation, additional women were identified and interviewed. They reported allegations of rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, and harassment.
The alleged acts are said to have taken place between 2010 and 2019 in France, Switzerland, and Belgium. Belgian authorities also formally notified French prosecutors earlier this month of allegations by a woman who accused Bruel of rape and sexual assault allegedly committed in Brussels in 2010.

Scale of allegations
In total, roughly 30 women have publicly accused Bruel of sexual violence in investigations published by several French and Belgian media outlets, including Mediapart, Elle, RTL, and RTBF.
Prosecutors also confirmed that the investigatory file will contain separate allegations from 13 women which were either dismissed or fall outside the statute of limitations. These will be re-examined to obtain an overall picture of the allegations made against Bruel.
Investigative news outlet Mediapart said two of the women include a former beauty queen who accuses Bruel of raping her in 2008, and a physiotherapist who alleges rape in 2000.
Key accusers
One of his accusers is Daniela Elstner, managing director of Unifrance, the French cinema and TV export agency. She claims Bruel sexually assaulted her in 1997 when both were attending Unifrance’s French Film Festival in Acapulco, Mexico. Elstner went public with her experience in 2017 but had never named Bruel at the time, saying only that the alleged attacker was a high-profile figure in the film industry.
Another complaint relates to an alleged rape said to have occurred in Brittany in 2012 during the Dinard British and Irish Film Festival, where Bruel was serving as jury president.
French television presenter Flavie Flament also accused Bruel of raping her in 1991 when she was a minor. She told AFP that her case was not among those being investigated this week, but criticised what she described as a slow judicial system. She said it took media coverage of her complaint for the investigation to move forward.
Bruel’s response
Bruel protested his innocence last month, saying in an Instagram post that he had never forced a woman. His lawyers said he would cooperate fully with the judicial process. He had consistently made clear he was available to judicial authorities so he could respond through the proper legal proceedings.
