Popular Haryanvi singer Masoom Sharma is in trouble after a recent performance at Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, where he allegedly sang ‘Chambal Ke Daku’, a song that went against the event’s rules.

The Chandigarh Police have booked the singer for performing a track that is said to promote violence.

The event took place on March 28, 2025, at the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) in Sector-25. The show, held from 8:00 PM to 9:55 PM, had been officially approved by the Chandigarh Administration.

But the permission clearly stated that performers must avoid songs or content related to violence, alcohol, drugs, or gangster culture, whether played through speakers or sung live.

Despite these instructions, Masoom Sharma reportedly performed his song ‘Chambal Ke Daku’, which allegedly glorifies violent behaviour. An FIR has now been registered against him under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Surender Singh filed the complaint, and the case is now with the West Sector Police Station in Chandigarh.

The matter became even more serious after a student, Aditya Thakur, lost his life on the same night. Thakur, a second-year student at PU, was reportedly attacked and beaten to death during the cultural event. His death has sparked concern about the influence of violent or aggressive lyrics on young audiences, especially in college settings.

Masoom Sharma is a popular name in the Haryanvi music world. However, he has often received criticism for promoting aggressive themes in his songs.

Earlier this year, the Haryana government banned more than 30 songs that were found to promote crime and anti-social behaviour, and many of them are associated with Sharma.

The Chandigarh Police are now looking deeper into what happened that night, both the performance and the incident involving Thakur’s death.
