Majuli island prepares for Rasotsav 2025, where every performance honours Zubeen Garg

The river island of Majuli in Assam is buzzing with excitement as preparations now reach a fever pitch for the annual Rasotsav. The autumn festival is the island’s most celebrated event. Known for its grand retelling of Lord Krishna’s divine Raslila, this year’s festival, starting on November 4, carries special significance. Every stage will pay tribute to Zubeen Garg who passed away tragically in Singapore on September 19.

Over 67 stages and Satra institutions are joining the festivities each preparing their own creative interpretations of the Raslila. The island’s artisans and craftsmen are working tirelessly carving masks. The have also already started building elaborate sets in addition to perfecting decorations for the grand performances.

Mask-making is a unique art form for which Majuli which is renowned worldwide. For the festival, this activity now is in full swing. Artisans are creating intricate masks of peacocks, Aghasur, and other characters essential to the Raslila performances. The festival has already attracted attention from international visitors.

All Ras stages will dedicate their performances to Zubeen Garg, and the Yuva Samannay Krishti Sangha has announced that the Raslila will be open to the public free of cost for three days.
