A cafe in Surrey, Canada, owned by comedian Kapil Sharma, became a site of violent episode this week when shots were fired at the premises late Wednesday night. No injuries were reported. But the incident has sparked shockwaves online, especially after a claim of responsibility was made by a Khalistani terrorist.
Harjit Singh Laddi, a man associated with the banned terrorist group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), released a statement on social media. He said that he and fellow BKI member Toofan Singh were behind the shooting at ‘Kap’s Cafe’.
The two claim the act was retaliation for a segment aired on Sharma’s comedy show. A character allegedly made jokes while wearing traditional Nihang Sikh attire, something Laddi claims hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community.
“No religion or spiritual identity can be mocked in the name of comedy,” said Laddi in his post. He alleged that several members of the community had attempted to contact Sharma’s management, but were met with silence.
The absence of a public apology from Sharma reportedly escalated the situation in their eyes.
For context, the Nihang Sikhs are a revered martial sect within Sikhism. They are known for their blue robes, traditional weaponry, and deep-rooted commitment to Sikh values. They are often seen as guardians of Sikh tradition and spirituality.

According to the Surrey Police Service, officers responded to a report of gunshots around 1:50 AM on Thursday at the cafe. The cafe is located on the 8400 block of 120 Street.
Police confirmed that the shots were aimed directly at the business, damaging the property while staff members were still inside. No one was harmed in the incident.
Surrey authorities have not confirmed the motive behind the shooting and say the investigation is ongoing.
Meanwhile, Harjit Singh Laddi remains on India’s National Investigation Agency’s most-wanted list. The Canadian government recognizes him as part of a designated terrorist organization.
As of now, Kapil Sharma himself has not issued a public statement regarding the attack or the controversy surrounding the remarks made on his show.
