Amazon’s live-action adaptation of ‘God of War’ will recast its lead role. Ryan Hurst, who plays Kratos, tore a bicep on the set of the Prime Video series while performing a stunt. The injury requires surgery. Production is on pause while the actor begins what is likely to be a lengthy recovery.
Why the show can’t simply wait
The co-lead, Atreus, is played by a child actor, Callum Vinson, which makes it hard to use much of the existing footage since kids grow up fast. This is one reason the production has chosen to recast Kratos rather than delay filming until Hurst heals.
The show hit a major snag after Hurst got injury on set, and production paused in Vancouver, where filming had been underway. Producers had initially hoped to have him back on set by mid-August, but sources say the recovery process is too long to meet that timeline. Some reports suggest filming could delay till 2027, though Prime Video has not officially confirmed anything.
Timing turns bittersweet for Hurst
The recasting comes in what was supposed to be a great week for Hurst, since he also appears in Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey, opening around the same time. His injury cuts short a personal high point just as another major project of his reaches theatres.
The story and the cast
God of War follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they journey to spread the ashes of Faye, Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother. Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.
The supporting cast includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri and Danny Woodburn as Brok. The ensemble also features Louis Cunningham as Modi, Sonya Walger as Freya, and Island Austin as Thrud.
A rare move in television production
Recasting the lead of a series after an injury is unfortunate and extremely rare. A comparable case involved Netflix. The streamer shut down production on Cowboy Bebop for seven to nine months after lead John Cho sustained a knee injury during filming, which required surgery and extensive rehab. That series resumed with Cho still in the role. God of War has taken a different path by moving to replace its star instead.
