Berlin had glitter, gasps, and a lot of happy tears on Saturday night. The 38th European Film Awards turned into a love letter to one film in particular, ‘Sentimental Value’.

According to ‘The Hollywood Reporter’, the awards were held in Berlin (local time), and the audience watched as filmmaker Joachim Trier walked away as the evening’s biggest winner.

‘Sentimental Value’ becomes the night’s biggest star

Joachim Trier’s ‘Sentimental Value’ swept. The film grabbed the prestigious Best European Film award, while Trier himself picked up Best Director. As if that wasn’t enough, the movie also won Best Screenplay, shared by Trier and co-writer Eskil Vogt.

The acting categories were equally emotional. Stellan Skarsgård won Best European Actor, while Renate Reinsve took home Best European Actress, both for the same film. Yes, a clean double acting win.

Adding to the film’s charm, Hania Rani won Best Score.

Spain’s Oscar hope makes a strong statement

Spain’s official Oscar entry, ‘Sirat,’ directed by Oliver Laxe, made sure it wasn’t overshadowed. The film quietly collected several technical awards and showed its strength behind the camera.

‘Sirat’ won Best Production Design, Sound Design, Editing, and Best Cinematography. It also made history by winning the first-ever Best Casting Award at the European Film Awards.

Germany, animation, and craft awards shine bright

Germany also had a reason to celebrate. ‘Sound of Falling,’ the country’s entry for Best International Feature at the upcoming US Academy Awards, won Best European Costume Design, as reported by ‘The Hollywood Reporter’.

In animation, Ugo Bienvenu’s fantasy film ‘Arco’ captured hearts and won European Animated Feature Film. Meanwhile, Torsten Witte created history by winning the first-ever Hair and Make-Up EFA for his work on ‘Bugonia.’

Special honour for Alice Rohrwacher

One of the most respected moments of the night came when Italian filmmaker Alice Rohrwacher was honoured with the European Achievement in World Cinema Award. Known for films like ‘La Chimera’, ‘Futura’, and ‘Happy as Lazzaro’, Rohrwacher received warm applause for her lasting impact on global cinema.
