The ashes of the late film star Dharmendra were immersed in the River Ganga at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar on Wednesday morning. His grandson, Karan Deol, formally carried out the ash immersion process in the presence of his father, the well-known Bollywood actor Sunny Deol, and his uncle, Bobby Deol.

Sunny and Bobby arrived in Haridwar on Wednesday morning with the urn containing Dharmendra’s ashes. Later, Karan immersed the veteran actor’s ashes in the Ganga at Har Ki Pauri, in keeping with the traditional religious rites. This was followed by the entire family taking part in prayers and taking a dip in the Ganga, said local purohit Rahul Shrotriya, who conducted the rituals for the Deol family.

The ash immersion ritual of Hindi cinema’s late superstar was kept strictly confidential. The family maintained distance from the media, the political class, and other sections of society. People present at the venue were categorically instructed not to share any information about the ritual. After the prayers, Sunny Deol and his family left Haridwar for the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun. The entire exercise — from the family’s arrival in Haridwar to their movement to the ghat, the hotel, and later to the Dehradun airport — was carried out under tight security.

It may be recalled that Dharmendra passed away in Mumbai on November 24 at the age of 89. His demise left the entire film fraternity and his fans grieving.
