The Game Awards 2025 was one of its kind and we are not kidding. The gaming world glued eyes on it. In an event filled with glittering lights and performances along with the most thrilling announcements, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 came out on top with the title of Game of the Year.
The win is a spectacular moment for the team behind the title, who had already generated buzz with an impressive thirteen nominations, the most of any game this year.
About Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Set in a hauntingly beautiful post-apocalyptic version of Belle Époque Paris, Clair Obscur invites players into the city of Lumiere, where a small band of characters faces a looming threat that could destroy their home.
It nails a unique combination of classic turn-based RPG elements with innovative rhythm-based systems; the players have to plan not only their attacks but also defend perfectly on time, accordant to enemies’ strikes.
Beating the big names
Clair Obscur competed with stiff competition such as Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding 2 and Nintendo’s Donkey Kong Bananza. Yet the game’s development team, numbering approximately thirty people at Sandfall Studios, still came up with a polished experience capable of standing toe-to-toe against these blockbuster titles.
The list didn’t stop there at Game of the Year. Clair Obscur went on to take Best Narrative, Best Role-Playing Game, and Best Original Score awards. Both critics and players stressed how its music greatly enhanced the emotional depth of the story.
Even beyond the gaming sphere, there were ripples from the game earlier. As recently as May 2025, French President Emmanuel Macron personally congratulated its developers and celebrated how Clair Obscur showcased French creativity on the world stage.
