Actress Shweta Tripathi has started shooting for the film version of the hit web series ‘Mirzapur’, and she’s once again stepping into the shoes of her much-loved character, Gajgamini ‘Golu’ Gupta. The shoot has begun in Benares (Varanasi), a city that holds a special place in her heart.
Speaking to IANS, she said, “Coming back as Golu feels like meeting an old friend, someone who has seen me through every phase of life. Benares adds its own magic to every story. It’s raw, real, and full of life.”
The actress, who made her mark with projects like ‘Masaan’ and ‘Mirzapur’, shared how filming in Benares feels like completing a life circle. “This city has been witness to my journey as an actor. From ‘Masaan’ to ‘Mirzapur’, and now this film. Everything connects back here. Golu has evolved, and so have I, but what remains constant is her inner fire. I can’t wait for the audience to feel that energy on the big screen,” she said.
The makers have confirmed that ‘Mirzapur’ is now being adapted into a full-length feature film, marking the first time an Indian web series is making this crossover. Fans can expect the same gritty world, layered storytelling, and intense characters. But this time, with a cinematic scale.
The ‘Mirzapur’ universe revolves around Akhandanand ‘Kaleen’ Tripathi, a crime lord and carpet businessman who rules the Purvanchal region of Uttar Pradesh with power and fear. The first season featured a stellar cast including Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyendu Sharma, Vikrant Massey, Shweta Tripathi, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Rasika Dugal, Harshita Gaur, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda.

In Season 2, the story got darker and more political. It introduced new faces like Vijay Varma, Isha Talwar, Lilliput, Anjum Sharma, Priyanshu Painyuli, Anangsha Biswas, and Neha Sargam.
The series was filmed across several parts of Uttar Pradesh, including Mirzapur, Jaunpur, Azamgarh, Ghazipur, Lucknow, Raebareli, Gorakhpur, and Varanasi.
Shweta last appeared in the comedy film ‘Kanjoos Makhichoos’ directed by Vipul Mehta. She co-starred with Kunal Kemmu, Piyush Mishra, Alka Amin, Rajeev Gupta, and the late Raju Srivastava. The film drew inspiration from Gujarati play ‘Sajan Re Jhooth Mat Bolo’. And, it showed a completely different side of her acting range.
