Pia Benegal accepts Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for her late father, Shyam Benegal

The 70th Filmfare Awards turned emotional on Saturday night as legendary filmmaker Shyam Benegal was remembered and celebrated with a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award.

The honour recognised his extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema and his unmatched storytelling that shaped generations of filmmakers.

Karan Johar presented the award. The director paid heartfelt tribute to Benegal’s cinematic journey. Accepting the award on behalf of her late father, Pia Benegal spoke with pride and emotion.

“He is missed terribly by me, my family, and everyone who knew him. He touched so many lives, both personally and professionally. And he was a truly magical person, and I accept this with happiness and pride,” she said, as shared by Filmfare’s official social media handle.

Shyam Benegal, the visionary director behind classics like ‘Manthan’, ‘Ankur’, and ‘Bhumika’m, passed away on December 23, 2024, at the age of 90. He breathed his last at Mumbai’s Wockhardt Hospital.

Born on December 14, 1934, in Hyderabad, Benegal came from a Konkani-speaking family. His films were popular for their realism, deep social themes, and powerful character portrayals. Over the years, he worked with several actors from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and the National School of Drama (NSD), giving early breaks to stars like Smita Patil, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Shabana Azmi, Amrish Puri, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda.

Benegal’s movies often explored complex layers of Indian society from rural struggles to women’s empowerment and political realities.

During his long and illustrious career, Shyam Benegal received some of the highest honours in Indian cinema. These included the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
