While his new production ‘Dhadak 2’ is currently running in theatres, filmmaker Karan Johar took a moment to look back at a movie that’s still close to his heart. On August 11, ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’ (KANK) completed 19 years, and Karan got nostalgic.
The director-producer shared some behind-the-scenes pictures and videos from the sets of the film on his Instagram on Monday. Along with the photos, he wrote a note about how special the film was for him.
“Some love stories are timeless,” he wrote. “KANK will always be that film for me. It was my third movie, and I was honoured to work with such talented people. The story was bold, emotional, and full of heart.”
Released in 2006, ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’ starred big Bollywood names like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Abhishek Bachchan, and Preity Zinta.

The film was set in New York and explored the sensitive topic of extra-marital relationships. Shah Rukh and Rani’s characters fall in love despite being married to other people, and that storyline created a huge buzz back then.
However, the movie didn’t do well at the box office. It was heavily criticised when it came out. Many people felt the film could have a negative impact on Indian society because it showed a romantic relationship outside marriage in a sympathetic light.
At that time, this was considered taboo.
Even though the movie didn’t become a big hit, its music became extremely popular. Songs like “Mitwa,” “Tumhi Dekho Na,” and “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna” were chartbusters and are still remembered fondly.
For Karan Johar, the film was something he put his heart and soul into. He believed in the story and its emotional depth, even if audiences weren’t ready for it back then.
