Nothing says celebration like a Bollywood song. And, Zohran Mamdani, New York City’s newly elected mayor, proved it in style! Imagine this: you’ve just won a historic election, walked up to the stage to deliver your victory speech and the first notes of a Bollywood anthem suddenly fill the air. That’s exactly what happened when Mamdani, the city’s first Muslim and first South Asian mayor, took the stage, and the crowd erupted to the tune of ‘Dhoom Machale’ from the blockbuster film ‘Dhoom’.

With odds stacked heavily against him, less than 1% at the start, Mamdani’s rise was the story of a true underdog. Over the past year, he built momentum, engaged voters across the city, and ultimately defeated high-profile opponents including Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa. He captured 50.3% of the vote in a fiercely competitive, high-turnout election.

During his victory speech, Mamdani didn’t just celebrate his own win. He framed the moment as a milestone for the city and its immigrant communities. “New York will remain a city of immigrants… powered by immigrants and, as of tonight, led by an immigrant,” he declared.

To mark the historic nature of the occasion, he quoted Jawaharlal Nehru’s famous words from his Tryst with Destiny speech, calling it “a moment that comes rarely in history.”

And in a subtle nod to his critics and former President Donald Trump, Mamdani challenged him with a playful line: “Turn the volume up.”

But what truly captured global attention wasn’t just the politics, it was the celebration itself. As Mamdani stood with his wife, Rama Duwaji, and his parents, the familiar opening beats of “Dhoom Machale” reverberated across the venue.

The song, a signature number from a film that launched a hit franchise about stylish thieves, has been a staple of parties and celebrations for over two decades.
