Lionsgate has set a release date for its remake of ‘The Blair Witch Project’. The film is scheduled to hit theatres on September 24, 2027. The announcement was reported by Variety on June 23.

Who is making it

Dylan Clark, who got his start on YouTube, is directing the upcoming Blair Witch Project from a script by Chris Thomas Devlin.

Executive producers of the remake include the 1999 film’s creators Eduardo Sanchez, Daniel Myrick, and Gregg Hale, as well as original film cast members Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams. They will be joined by Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Steven Schneider. Blumhouse-Atomic Monster founders Jason Blum and James Wan will serve as producers with Roy Lee, Adam Hendricks, and Greg Gilreath.

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson has previously referred to the film as a “new vision” that will “reintroduce this horror classic for a new generation.” No plot details have been released.

About the original film

‘The Blair Witch Project’, released in 1999, is one of the most commercially successful indie films of all time, earning nearly $250 million at the global box office against a micro budget. The movie uses found footage to capture the alleged true story of three student filmmakers who disappear while making a film about the legend of Blair Witch.

The film was made by Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick and became a landmark in the found footage genre. Its marketing campaign, which presented the events as real, was a significant part of why it caught on the way it did.

The films that came before

This is not the first time someone has tried to revisit the Blair Witch world. The Blair Witch Project spawned a 2000 sequel, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, which was not nearly as successful as the original. A 2016 remake, simply titled Blair Witch, was directed by Adam Wingard. Neither film matched what the original did commercially or culturally.

The 2027 remake is Lionsgate’s attempt to bring the property back to a wider audience, with the original creators involved as executive producers and a new director and writer attached.

Lionsgate currently operates a Blair Witch-themed escape room in Las Vegas called Escape Blair Witch.
