Raazi narrates the story of a young Kashmiri girl, Sehmat Khan, who is trained to become a spy and then married off in Pakistan. Sehmat is trained and sent to Pakistan to gather information for the Indian intelligence. Raazi is based on a novel,  Calling Sehmat, written by Harinder Sikka, a former Indian Navy officer. Calling Sehmat is based on the story of a Kashmiri woman who married a Pakistani officer during the 1971 India-Pakistan war. Alia Bhatt’s portrayal of feminine yet strong Sehmat Khan was quite evident in the trailers.

Talking about the film, director Meghna Gulzar said, “For me, the core thread of the story, which is the girl’s journey, was what stood out for me and that is what I picked out to make a film. In fact, my father, when I first told him… because this book had first come to him… he couldn’t understand why I would want to make this film. But there were layers that I saw, and that he saw later when he read the screenplay.”

Raazi features  Vicky Kaushal, Jaideep Ahlawat, Soni Razdan, Rajit Kapoor, Ashwath Bhatt alongside Alia Bhatt in pivotal roles.
