A small island in Kerala. A quiet young boy. A dream connected to football legend Lionel Messi. These are the heart of ‘52 Blue’, a coming-of-age drama that is now preparing for a major international moment. The film will have its European premiere at the 17th edition of the London Indian Film Festival on July 9 at BFI Southbank.
The movie follows the emotional journey of a young man who leaves behind a protected life in Kerala and travels toward the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. His mission is deeply personal. He wants to chase a dream linked to his childhood hero and the memory of his late brother. According to reports published by Variety, the film will also travel to Birmingham for another screening on July 10.

A boy raised away from the world
At the center of ‘52 Blue’ is Ashish, played by Yadav Shashidhar. Ashish grows up on an isolated island in Kerala, far away from the noise and speed of modern life. His father keeps him sheltered from the outside world, believing it is the safest way to protect him. That father is played by Adil Hussain, while his mother is portrayed by Neha Dhupia.
Inside the home, the father is strict and protective, while the mother quietly encourages Ashish to think beyond the island. As Ashish grows older, the desire to break free becomes stronger. Football becomes more than a game for him. It turns into a symbol of hope, freedom, and unfinished memories connected to his brother.
Journey From Kerala to the FIFA World Cup
After finally stepping out of his protected life, Ashish begins a long journey across countries toward Qatar, where the FIFA World Cup takes place. His biggest motivation is his admiration for Messi, but underneath that dream lies emotional pain and family memories that continue to follow him.
The film is directed by Ali El Arabi, known earlier for the documentary ‘Captains of Zaatari’. El Arabi and members of the cast are expected to attend both festival screenings in London and Birmingham.
Adding another layer to the film is an original track titled “It’s Your Turn,” created by Badshah.
This year marks the 17th edition of the London Indian Film Festival, which also includes the Birmingham Indian Film Festival and Manchester Indian Film Festival. The event will spread across 20 venues in six UK cities: London, Birmingham, Manchester, Sheffield, Bradford, and Liverpool.
The festival will present films in 10 different languages, showing stories from many cultures and backgrounds. Organisers said the complete multi-city lineup will be officially announced on June 10.
