India’s media and entertainment sector is expected to continue its steady growth over the next few years. According to an official statement released on Monday, revenues in the industry are likely to grow at around 7 per cent each year until 2027.
Industry growth backed by strong numbers
If projections hold, the sector’s overall size could increase from Rs 2,502 billion in 2024 to nearly Rs 3,067 billion by 2027. The numbers highlight how the industry’s role is a strong pillar of India’s services economy.
A major employment generator
The media and entertainment is not just about films and streaming platforms. It supports more than 10 million jobs, both directly and indirectly.

At present, the sector’s annual output stands at around Rs 3 lakh crore. This reflects its wide reach across television, digital media, films, music, live events and gaming.

A large part of the future growth is expected to come from Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics and Extended Reality, commonly grouped under AVGC-XR.
These segments combine creativity with technology. Animation and VFX are now central to global entertainment, while gaming has become part of everyday digital life for millions of people.
Together, these areas are helping turn creative ideas into scalable intellectual property that can travel across borders.
India as a global production hub
