Yamuna Swachhta Abhiyan 2026: Delhi CM Rekha Gupta leads mega cleanliness drive across 28 ghats

A large-scale cleanliness campaign along the Yamuna River saw thousands of volunteers, political leaders and public representatives come together on Sunday, as the Delhi government organised the ‘Yamuna Tat Swachhta Abhiyan 2026’ across 28 ghats.

Delhi CM Rekha Gupta participated in the drive at Dashmesh Ghat in Geeta Colony and personally took part in the cleanliness activity. The campaign saw participation by Delhi government ministers, MLAs, BJP leaders, party workers, and volunteers.

The initiative also saw thousands of volunteers from more than 500 social and religious organisations participate in the mega cleanliness drive.

‘Citizens must participate’: Delhi CM

Delhi CM Rekha Gupta said that public participation was essential for restoring the Yamuna’s clean, pure, and uninterrupted flow.

The Chief Minister emphasised that while the government would continue working towards cleaning the river, citizens also needed to contribute towards the mission.

“Government will do its work, but to make the Yamuna clean, citizens will also have to fulfil their responsibility,” she said.

A push for mass movement

The campaign also saw participation from Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma, MLA Shikha Rai, Speaker Vijender Gupta, party workers and local residents at multiple ghats including Dashmesh Ghat and Hathi Ghat.

Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma also participated in the cleanliness drive at Hathi Ghat and stressed that continuous efforts were underway to clean the Yamuna. Speaking about the campaign, Verma said, “Efforts are being made to clean the Yamuna. Prime Minister Modi has always issued clear directives regarding this. We have received explicit instructions, continuous meetings with our Home Minister–who seeks comprehensive updates every twenty days–and full cooperation from the Chief Minister. With such immense support and blessings, nothing can stop the cleaning of Mother Yamuna. In three years, you will witness a significant transformation in the Yamuna…”

Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta participated in the cleanliness drive at Purana Pul and called for transforming the initiative into a public movement.

“Thousands of people are participating in this campaign for a clean Yamuna; the initiative has begun with a firm resolve to ensure the river flows continuously and remains pristine. It is essential to transform this into a mass movement, driven by the conviction that the Yamuna will regain its lost glory and the pride of Delhi’s residents will be restored. We believe the river will once again flow freely in its divine, majestic form…”
