A man allegedly slit the throat of a seven-month-old infant and later murdered his lover inside a residence in North Delhi’s Majnu Ka Tila area, the Delhi Police said on Tuesday.

The victim, Sonal, a 22-year-old woman, was babysitting her friend Rashmi’s child — the infant who was murdered, an officer said.

The incident came to light when locals suspected that something was amiss and informed the police about it.

A police team from the Civil Lines Police Station visited the spot and found two bodies lying in a pool of blood.

Eventually, a crime team, accompanied by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), was called to the scene to inspect the area and collect evidence.

The assailant fled after stabbing the duo with a knife multiple times, a senior officer said.

A local said, “This afternoon, Rashmi stepped out to pick up her elder daughter from school, leaving the minor with Sonal. Shortly after, her boyfriend arrived at the house, and in a fit of rage, he murdered both Sonal and the infant before escaping.”

According to sources, the couple had fallen out recently, after which Sonal had been staying at her friend Rashmi’s house for a few days.

The officer said, “We are conducting a thorough investigation into the case, and the crime team, along with the FSL team, is inspecting the crime scene.”

“Both bodies have been recovered and sent for post-mortem to gather more details,” he added.

A case has been registered under the relevant sections of the BNS, and further investigation is underway.
