With the arrest of three accused from Paharganj, the Delhi Police smashed an interstate syndicate of carjackers and burglars, it said on Thursday.
Rajvir Singh (24) and Gurdeep Singh (21), both originally from Madhya Pradesh’s Indore, and Karan Singh (21), a native of Maharashtra, were apprehended by the police from Chitragupta Road of the Paharganj area on Sunday.
The police said they had confiscated stolen vehicles, gold, silver ornaments, and the tools used in robberies from the possession of the trio.
Following the arrests, the police claimed to have resolved 15 cases of vehicle theft and burglary reported from different parts of the city.
“On Sunday, after receiving the information about the suspects’ movement near the Chitragupt Road, Chuna Mandi in Paharganj we laid a trap,” Nidhin Valsan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, said.
“By keeping a constant track with the help of technical surveillance, we got our hands on the suspects.”
Four stolen motorcycles, nearly 41 grams of gold or gold-plated metal, 19 grams of silver or silver-plated metal, four silver bracelets, and a large cache of tools used in vehicle thefts and house break-ins were recovered, he added.
“During the search, we also recovered multiple items linked to a case registered at the Sarai Rohilla police station,” the DCP asserted.
During sustained questioning, the trio admitted to their involvement in cases of multiple theft.
It was further disclosed that the gang primarily would target residential areas and the two-wheelers parked there. They used special tools to break into the residence and steal vehicles.
As per a statement by the investigators, the accused kept the clothes and shoes worn at the time of committing the crime, which eventually helped them to ascertain their identities with CCTV footage from the scene of the offences.
“One of the stolen motorcycles was linked to a case registered at Shakarpur police station in East Delhi. Three more stolen bikes were recovered at the instance of the accused during further interrogation,” he said.
Rajvir Singh, who was the kingpin of this group, was previously arrested in 2020 in a theft case registered at the DBG Road police station and is also linked to three other cases in Delhi. The police said he is an expert in housebreaking and motor vehicle theft.
“Rajvir led the gang and facilitated the planning and execution of crimes. The other two – Gurdeep and Karan – assisted in reconnaissance, stealing, and concealing stolen property,” the DCP said, adding that the cases solved with their arrest are spread across multiple districts, including Central, North, East, and West Delhi.
Further investigation is underway to trace other associates of the gang.
