A case of alleged violence against a Scheduled Tribe woman in Jhamaklal village under Phansidewa police station in Darjeeling district has been taken up with constitutional authorities by Darjeeling MP Raju Bista, who has sought urgent intervention.
Representations have been submitted to the Governor of West Bengal CV Ananda Bose, the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes, and the National Human Rights Commission, highlighting the alleged assault of a seven-month pregnant Adivasi woman on 23 December, 2025 following resistance to the illegal transfer of ancestral tribal land.
It has been alleged that the victim suffered severe injuries leading to a premature delivery on 8 January. The newborn, reportedly affected by internal injuries, died three days later. Allegations have also been made that despite complaints being lodged earlier, prompt action was not taken by the police, with only one arrest made so far.
Immediate cognisance of the case, strict enforcement of provisions under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, arrest of all accused persons, and an independent probe into the alleged land transfer have been sought. Action against officials for alleged dereliction of duty, along with compensation and rehabilitation for the victim’s family, has also been demanded.
“I am deeply disturbed by this heinous crime against a vulnerable Scheduled Tribe woman. Justice must be ensured without further delay,” Mr Bista said.
