Two cousins were shot by unidentified assailants in northeast Delhi’s Shastri Park area late Thursday night, police said on Friday. One of them succumbed to his injuries while the other remains in critical condition.
According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Uvam, while the injured, Nadeem, sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen and is undergoing treatment.
“The incident occurred late on Thursday night, and we received a call regarding the matter at around 3 am,” a senior police officer said.
The officer added that the caller informed police about two men found lying in a pool of blood on the service road near Shastri Park Red Light Chowk.
A police team from Shastri Park police station immediately reached the spot and found both victims with gunshot wounds.
They were rushed to Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital, where doctors declared Uvam dead. His body was later sent for post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, Nadeem was shifted to another hospital and remains in critical condition.
Police said preliminary investigation revealed that Uvam had come from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, along with his mother to visit his sister’s home in Street No. 17, Kailash Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Delhi.
According to Uvam’s father, he had been missing since around 2 am and despite efforts to trace him, the family could not locate him. They were later informed by police that he had been found with gunshot injuries.
The police are yet to ascertain the motive behind the attack or identify the shooters.
“The identities of the assailants and the motive will become clearer once Nadeem regains consciousness and provides his statement,” the officer said, adding that several important clues have been recovered from the scene.
Investigators are also examining CCTV footage from the surrounding areas to identify the suspects.
A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway, police added.
