West Bengal Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee on Wednesday justified the pelting of eggs at Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra, reasoning that it is the direct consequence of her party’s actions in the state.

“What should she be pelted with? Should they be showered with flowers? Look at what they have done in the state. This is something that they deserve,” the minister said.

His remarks come at the backdrop of egg attacks on several TMC leaders in the state, the latest being the one against Moitra, one of the most vocal voices of the Kalighat faction of TMC.

Eggs rained on the glass windows of the roadside party office at Kaliganj in Nadia where Moitra was seated.

In a series of posts on X, the Krishnanagar MP tagged the Director General of Police and the West Bengal Police, alleging that officers had stood by without dispersing the crowd.

“For the past two hours your police have been watching the fun and not dispersing the mob. They want me to flee and they will pelt eggs or stones while I enter my car. Please do your job. Disperse the mob. I am in NH Dhaba, Plassey,” Moitra wrote on X sharing a video of the incident.

Mukherjee also welcomed the arrest of TMC leader Debraj Chakraborty, a close aide of party national general secretary and former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee.

Chakraborty was a mayoral council member of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, and is the husband of former TMC MLA Aditi Munshi, who represented the Rajarhat Gopalpur Assembly constituency.

“It is good that he has been arrested. His name is Debraj, but his activities were like Ravana in Ravan Raj,” the minister said.
