Three separate urgent mentions involving Trinamool Congress leaders landed up before the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday. While the urgent hearing plea by Krishnanagar MP Mahua Moitra was rejected, the court however took up former state minister Sujit Bose’s bail petition later in the day. In the third case, former Kolkata Deputy Mayor Atin Ghosh’s anticipatory bail plea might be heard on Thursday.

Moitra had sought legal protection from the High Court after she was attacked with eggs, bricks and burnt brinjals during in Nadia’s Kaliganj on July 1. Her counsel, Ayan Bhattacharya, sought an urgent hearing before Justice Sougata Bhattacharyya who observed, “Such cases are being filed in gallons,” before rejecting the plea.

The MP had earlier obtained the court’s permission to file the petition, alleging that while the police were actively pursuing an FIR registered against her, they had failed to act on her complaints regarding the alleged attack.

Moitra has accused BJP workers of surrounding her party office, hurling raw eggs and raising slogans against her during a preparatory meeting for the July 21 programme. She also alleged police inaction despite the incident unfolding in their presence.

In a separate matter, former Fire Services Minister Sujit Bose, arrested by the Enforcement Directorate, sought an urgent hearing of his bail plea. His counsel, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, mentioned the matter before the court, which agreed to hear the matter later in the day.

In another case, former Deputy Mayor Atin Ghosh also requested early hearing and sought anticipatory bail in connection with the alleged land scam. However, Justice Joy Sengupta declined the plea. The matter may be heard on Thursday.
