The Krishnagar Police in West Bengal has arrested as many as 23 people and seized narcotic substances and a large quantity of illicit liquor within the first two days of a two-week special enforcement drive.
The special drive began on 11 July and continued across different areas under the Krishnagar Police District, with teams from the police stations, District Intelligence Branch (DIB), District Enforcement Branch (DEB) and Special Operations Group (SOG) carrying out intelligence-based raids and searches.
During the operations conducted on 11 and 12 July, police registered 20 specific cases, including 20 cases under the Excise Act and three cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. A total of 23 persons were arrested, including three accused allegedly involved in narcotics-related offences.
Police seized 410 bottles of illicit liquor along with 63.675 litres of illegally manufactured liquor during the drive. In addition, a quantity of narcotic substances was recovered, including 48 bottles of Codeine Phosphate-based cough syrup and 1.3 kg of ganja.
The Superintendent of Police of Krishnagar Police District Atul V said that the operation has been intensified to dismantle networks involved in the supply and distribution of narcotic drugs and illegal liquor. The drive is being conducted under the direct supervision of senior officers, with special focus on identifying areas vulnerable to such illegal activities.
“The crackdown will continue for the next two weeks with regular raids, surveillance and intelligence-based action to curb the circulation of narcotic substances and illicit liquor,” he said.
The police district has also urged residents to provide information regarding illegal drug and liquor activities, assuring that strict action would be taken against those involved in such trades.
