With the arrest of a father-son duo among three men ahead of Diwali, the Delhi Police claimed to have busted a racket in illegal supply of firecrackers in the city, an official said on Friday.

According to the police, the accused have been identified as Bhagwati Prasad, his son Tarun Singhal, and Rajiv Goel.

A senior officer, in his statement, mentioned that around 914 boxes of various types of firecrackers, sourced from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, were recovered from several locations across the city. “Our team, after receiving intel, laid a trap near Bank Colony Road in east Delhi’s Mandoli on Wednesday and nabbed Prasad and his son while they were riding a scooter to deliver the firecrackers,” he said.

During sustained interrogation, the duo confessed to the crime and revealed that they were running a shop near Nand Nagri Fatak.

Following a raid in the area, over 71 boxes containing 13 types of banned firecrackers were seized, the officer said, adding that the duo further disclosed they had sourced the stock from Goel.

Acting on this tipoff, the police conducted a raid at Goel’s godown on Main Mandoli Road and seized 818 boxes of 17 different types of banned firecrackers, officials said.

Goel, in his confession, admitted to having purchased the consignment from Meerut, the officer mentioned, adding that all three accused have been arrested and charged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Explosives Act.
