A 25-year-old private school teacher allegedly died by suicide at her Bengaluru home after leaving behind a handwritten note accusing her husband and sister-in-law of subjecting her to harassment, police said on Monday.

Investigators have registered a case and begun examining the allegations mentioned in the note. Police said the contents of the purported note are being verified before further legal action is taken.

Bengaluru teacher found dead at home

The deceased, identified as Shwetha, was a native of Chikkamagaluru and had been living in Sunkadakatte under the jurisdiction of the Kamakshipalya police station. She worked as a teacher at a private school in Bengaluru.

According to police, she was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her residence at around 11 pm on Sunday. Officers reached the spot after receiving information and recovered a handwritten note.

Death note alleges harassment

Police said the note accuses Shwetha’s husband and his sister of continuously harassing her and holds them responsible for her death.

Addressing her mother, she wrote, “If I die, please don’t spare them, mother.”

She also apologised in the note, writing, “I made a mistake. Please forgive me.”

Another portion of the note reads: “My husband and his sister are responsible for my death. In this background, I am tortured, and I don’t have any wish to live any further. In case I take the decision to end my life, don’t spare them.”

Marriage took place four months ago

Police said Shwetha had married her husband about four months ago after the two were in a relationship. The couple got married at the Shakti Ganapathi Temple in Kamalanagar, Bengaluru, and had been living together since then.

Officials said the investigation is focused on establishing the circumstances that led to the woman’s death.

The Kamakshipalya police have seized the purported suicide note and are verifying the allegations contained in it. Further action will depend on the outcome of the investigation, police said.
