What should have been a routine ride home after an IPL match turned fatal for two cousins in the capital, with a phone call made minutes before the crash becoming their last conversation.

Police said the cousins were heading home after an IPL match when the crash happened on Ashok Road late Monday night, once again putting the spotlight on reckless driving in the city.

Early signs suggest this may have been a hit-and-run, adding a troubling angle to the case. Police said they are examining CCTV footage from the area to identify the vehicle involved and reconstruct the sequence of events.

Abhav had spoken to his father around 10.30 pm, telling him he would reach home within half an hour. The accident is believed to have taken place during or immediately after that conversation.

Police sources said, “Preliminary investigations suggest that this appears to be a hit-and-run case. Two male persons were lying on the road unconscious, and they were rushed to the hospital, where they were declared dead.”

The deceased have been identified as Yagya Bhatia, 20, a BSc student, and Abhav Bhatia, 14, a school student, both residents of Ashok Nagar in Delhi.

What the police have found so far

Investigators have begun scanning footage from multiple cameras installed along Ashok Road and adjoining stretches. Officials said the initial probe suggests the vehicle involved did not stop after the collision.

The District Crime Team was called to the spot, and a forensic examination was carried out. The bodies have been shifted to the RML mortuary, and a case has been registered under relevant sections based on initial statements.
